Glossary of Terms Used on This Site

 

 

  AKC - American Kennel Club.

  AmCH - American Conformation Champion (AKC)

  AOM (Award of Merit) - Awards of Merit are awarded by Judges to publicly recognize those dogs and bitches that provided tough competition for the final winner(s) of BOB and BOS.

  BdaCH - Bermuda Conformation Champion.

  Best in Show (BIS) - The Best dog/bitch at a particular dog show.

  Best in Specialty Show (BISS) - The best dog/bitch at a specialty dog show.

  Best of Breed (BOB) - The best dog/bitch of those competing within a breed at a dog show.

  BIS (Best in Show) - The Best dog/bitch at a particular dog show.

  BISS (Best in Specialty Show) - The best dog/bitch at a specialty dog show.

  Bitch - The female canis familiaris (common dog).

  BOB (Best of Breed) - The best dog/bitch of those competing within a breed at a dog show.

  BOS (Best of Opposite Sex) -  The best dog/bitch that is the opposite sex of the Best of Breed.

  CERF - Canine Eye Registration Foundation.

  Challenge Certificate (CC) - System used in the UK where all papillons of each sex present compete for the Challenge Certificate of their sex.  Similar to the AKC Winners Award with the exception that Champions also compete for this award.  A Papillon must win three CC's to become a Champion.  In other words to become a champion you must have beaten other champions of the same sex in competition.

  Class - The competition category. i.e.  Puppy Dogs 6-9 Months, Puppy Dogs 9-12 Months, Puppy Dogs 12-18 months, Open Dogs, Bred By Exhibitor, etc.

  CC (Challenge Certificate) - System used in the UK where all papillons of each sex present compete for the Challenge Certificate of their sex.  Similar to the AKC Winners Award with the exception that Champions also compete for this award.  A Papillon must win three CC's to become a Champion.  In other words to become a champion you must have beaten other champions of the same sex in competition.

  CD (Companion Dog) -

  CDX (Companion Dog Excellent) -

  CH (Conformation Champion) - Under AKC rules any dog which has won fifteen points.  The requirement is that six or more of those points must have been won at two shows with a rating of three or more championship points each (called majors), and under two  different judges.  The balance of the points must be won under some other judge(s).

  Champion of Record - Term used to show that the registering organization (AKC, et al) recognizes and has recorded a dog/bitch as a Champion.

  ChCH - Swiss Conformation Champion.

  Conformation Champion (CH) - Under AKC rules any dog which has won fifteen points.  The requirement is that six or more of those points must have been won at two shows with a rating of three or more championship points each (called majors), and under two different judges.  The balance of the points must be won under some other judge(s).

  Crufts - The worlds largest dog show held by The Kennel Club of the United Kingdom in March of each year.

  Dam of Distinction (DOD) - Title awarded to a bitch that produces at least 10 first generation Champions of Record.

  Dam of Merit (DOM) - Title awarded to a bitch that produces at least 4  first generation Champions of Record.

  Dog - The male canis familiaris (common dog). 

  DOD (Dam of Distinction) - Title awarded to a bitch that produces at least 10 first generation Champions of Record.

  DOM (Dam of Merit) - Title awarded to a bitch that produces at least 4 first generation Champions of Record.

  Electroretinogram (ERG) - Eye test used to determine if a dog/bitch is afflicted with PRA.

  EngCH - Great Britain Champion (KC).

  ERG (Electroretinogram) - Eye test used to determine if a dog/bitch is afflicted with PRA.

  FinuCH - Finland Conformation Champion.

  FinV-## - Finland Winner and the year the dog was National Winner.

  IntCH - International Conformation Champion.

  JKC - Japan Kennel Club.

  JpCH - Japan Conformation Champion (JKC).

  Kans MVA - International Show Champion.

  KC - The Kennel Club (United Kingdom) established in 1871.

  Major - Term given to a dog show competition where the number of dogs/bitches competing will allow the awarding of the winning dog/bitch three, four, or five points towards their Champion of Record.

  Match - An organized competition amongst puppies that is for fun and training purposes.  Winners do not receive points towards their Champion of Record.

  Nuch - Norway Conformation Champion

  NorduCH - Norway Conformation Champion

  NordV-## - Norway Winner and the year the dog was National Winner.

  Patellar Luxation - A polygenic congenital defect whereby the knee cap (Patella) pops out of its proper position.  It can be classed into four categories (not covered here).

  Pedigree - A listing that shows a particular dog/bitch's ancestry.  Always ask to see this before buying a prospective show dog.  Also, inquire as to what makes each dog within the pedigree outstanding.

  POHJ MVA - Nordic Show Champion

  PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) -  A congenital defect  that causes  peripheral vision loss first, progressing to night blindness, and then to total blindness in Papillons.  Never breed a dog that is afflicted with this defect.

  PRA Cleared - A dog who has had its eyes tested after two years of age to ensure that it is not afflicted with PRA via an ERG test. 

  Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) -  A congenital defect that causes peripheral vision loss first, progressing to night blindness, and then to total blindness in Papillons.  Never breed a dog that is afflicted with this defect.

  Reserve Winners Bitch (RWB) - The bitch that is chosen by a judge out of all non-champion female competitors at a dog show within a breed as the bitch that second most closely represents the breed standard.

  Reserve Winners Dog (RWD) - The dog that is chosen by a judge out of all non-champion male competitors at a dog show within a breed as the dog that second most closely represents the breed standard (first runner up).

  RWB (Reserve Winners Bitch) - The bitch that is chosen by a judge out of all non-champion female competitors at a dog show within a breed as the bitch that second most closely represents the breed standard.

  RWD (Reserve Winners Dog) - The dog that is chosen by a judge out of all non-champion male competitors at a dog show within a breed as the dog that second most closely represents the breed standard (first runner up).

  Sire of Distinction (SOD) - Title awarded to a dog that sires at least 13  first generation Champions of Record.

  Sire of Merit (SOM) - Title awarded to a dog that sires at least 5 first generation Champions of Record.

  SKK - Sweden Kennel Club. 

  SOD (Sire of Distinction) - Title awarded to a dog that sires at least 13 first generation Champions of Record.

  SOM (Sire of Merit) - Title awarded to a dog that sires at least 5 first generation Champions of Record.

  SuCH - Sweden Conformation Champion.

  SV-## - Sweden National Winner and the year the dog was National Winner.

  Sweeps - A competition that does not count towards a dog's Champion of Record whereby the winning competitors are awarded prizes (possibly including money). 

  Place - Awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th in conformance competition in class.

  Top Puppy in England - Awarded by the Papillon Club of the UK  for the puppy winning the highest number of Best Puppy awards at Championship shows.

  Top Sire in England - See Top Stud Dog.

  Top Stud Dog in England - Awarded by the Papillon Club of the UK based on a point system of progeny, one point for each win, two  points for each CC, one point for each RCC (maximum of 20 points per progeny).

  Top Papillon in England - Awarded by the Papillon Club of the UK  for the dog or bitch winning the most CC's (Reserve CC's to be counted in the event of a tie).

  Westminster - Westminster Kennel Club Annual Invitational Benched Dog Show, held at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York.  This is the premier dog show in the USA held each February.  This show has been held since 1877.

  WB (Winners Bitch) - The bitch that is chosen by a judge out of all non-champion female competitors at a dog show, within a breed, as the bitch that most closely represents the breed standard.

  WD (Winners Dog) - The dog that is chosen by a judge out of all non-champion male competitors at a dog show, within a breed, as the dog that most closely represents the breed standard.

  Winners Bitch (WB) - The bitch that is chosen by a judge out of all non-champion female competitors at a dog show, within a breed, as the bitch that most closely represents the breed standard.

  Winners Dog (WD) - The dog that is chosen by a judge out of all non-champion  male competitors at a dog show, within a breed, as the dog that most closely represents the breed standard.
